FALUN

A PLACE IN THE HEART OF SWEDEN

With history looking back a thousand years, Falun is not a young city. Years back it was one of the largest and the most important cities in Sweden. Today it is quite small compared to contemporary major cities like Gothenburg, Stockholm or Malmö. It is the seat of the county.

Red little wooden houses are something that people tend think of when they imagine a scenic Swedish countryside. This special red color, Falu Rödfärg, is still manufactured today in Falun and gets its color from a side product of the Copper Mine - now defunct, but with plenty of raw material left. Also the famous sausage, Falukorv, comes from Falun. Every year, the major sports event, Vasaloppet, takes place in Falun.

There is a preserved house of 10 sqm. According to the legend a man and wife lived there together with five children. How has the world changed?

Not only is Falun a historical city, but it also hosts Sweden's leading university in the area of distance learning: Högskolan Dalarna.
